Ashe County Animal Control issues rabies alert
UPDATE from Ashe County Animal Control: Additional Rabies Information:
Since June 2025, Ashe County Animal Control has collected 4 raccoons that all tested positive for rabies.
The areas included:
Laurel Springs
Jefferson
West Jefferson
Creston
We collect (possible) rabid animals through out the year so this is nothing new. The reason for this information is to inform folks in the County of the recent cases. We want to make sure your animals are currently vaccinated against rabies. If your pets are not vaccinated we urge you to get them to the veterinarian and get them vaccinated.
North Carolina Law requires all dogs and cats receive a rabies vaccination by 4 months of age. Vaccinating our pets not only protects them but also protects us and our family against rabies.
The first rabies vaccination is good for 1 year and then any subsequent vaccination is good for 3 years.
We want you to educate yourself and family about rabies. If you have questions about this please call our office during normal business hours. 336-982-4060 If you believe you have an emergency please call 911 or 336-846-5600
