And congratulations to former WHS men’s and women’s soccer coach Doug Kidd, who led the Swansboro High women to the Eastern Championship on Wednesday night and a berth in the state title game in Raleigh on Saturday against Forbush.

Swansboro (23-1-3 record) defeated Cardinal Gibbons 1-0 in Raleigh. The Pirates benefited from an own goal to win the game.

It’s Kidd’s first trip to the state championship game. He led the WHS men and women to the state quarterfinals four times during his stay in Boone. He’s also the school’s all-time leader in wins with 446 (240 with the men and 206 with the women).

Kidd was also Northwestern 4A Conference coach of the Year 14 times; Regional Coach of the Year 14 times; State Coach of the Year three times (1993 and 1999 with the men; 1997 with the women), and he was National Soccer Coaches Athletic Association/Adidas South Regional Coach of the Year in 1999. He also coached in the men’s East-West Senior All-Star Game in 1998 at UNC-Greensboro. The West won that game, 6-2, and the Pioneers had two players on that team in goalkeeper Greg Brooks, who played at Appalachian State University, and Blake Griffin, who played at UNC-Asheville.
