Postgame Interviews

Playing in front of a full capacity home crowd for the first time since December 2019, the No. 17 Lenoir-Rhyne Football Team ran past Mars Hill 31-16. Dan Louba tied a LR record with four sacks and Dareke Young became the first WR to have three touchdowns in a game since TJ Smith in 2018.

Final: #17 Lenoir-Rhyne 31, Mars Hill 16
 Lenoir-Rhyne (2-1, 1-1 SAC), Mars Hill  (2-2, 1-1 SAC)
Location: Hickory, N.C. | Moretz Stadium

•   After a slow start that saw zero combined points in the first quarter, LR erupted with 17 second quarter points. Dwayne McGee scored from two yards out and Young's first TD catch of the game was sandwiched around a 40-yard Chase Allbaugh field goal as LR scored 17 unanswered in 8:36 of game action.
•   The Bears kept Mars Hill off the scoreboard until the 1:28 mark of the third quarter and LR wouldn't wait long to answer. 57 seconds after the Lions found paydirt, Young's second TD came on a 32-yarder to put LR up 24-8.
 •  Mars Hill had an answer and made it a one possession game at 24-16 with 12:33 to play but it was Young with the silencer again. The senior's 7-yard TD grab iced the win with 9:46 to play.
•   Mars Hill would dominate time of possession, controlling the ball for 35:29 compared to just 24:31 for LR. MHU would run 95 plays, with 65 of those being pass plays.
•   Mars Hill QB Jimmy Urzua threw the ball 65 times, completing 32 for 394 yards but no touchdowns. The Lions would manage just 60 yards rushing on 30 carries but both of their TDs came on the ground.
•   Grayson Willingham shook off a slow start to finish the game with 287 yards, three touchdowns and no turnovers. It was Willingham's 13th 200-yard passing game, three shy of the record set by Brett Meunier.
•   Young's final line was eight grabs for 160 yards and three touchdowns.
•   Dwayne McGee ran for 122 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown with a long of 45 yards on the night. It was McGee's fifth career 100-yard rushing game in just seven career contests.
•   Mars Hill's CJ Thompson had nine grabs for 145 yards, the most for an opposing player since Craig Rucker (also of Mars Hill) had 161 yards in September 2019.
•   Deondre Lester chipped in seven grabs for 75 yards.
•   Eric Jackson led the defense with 12 total tackles and added a pair of pass breakups. Jon Ross Maye filled the stat sheet with 11 tackles, a sack and three pass break ups.

•   Louba's four sacks tie the mark of Brad Lindamood who also recorded four sacks back on Nov. 3, 2001 against Newberry.
•   Young's three touchdowns mark just the seventh time in the 102-year history of LR Football that a Bear had three receiving TDs in a game. Young joined TJ Smith, Barry Tate, Shannon Myers, Sheldon Davis, Brian Bishop and Brian Jack on the exclusive list.
•   Allbaugh connected on all four of his extra points and is just four shy of breaking the Division II record of most consecutive extra points made.
•   Lenoir-Rhyne extended their streak of consecutive games with a sack to 46 thanks to five sacks tonight. The five sacks are the most since LR posted six sacks of Carson-Newman on November 30, 2019.

UP NEXT: LR will travel to UVA Wise next Saturday for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
