BOONE - The Appalachian State University football team has been on a roll since the the mid-2000s. Three national titles, a number of conference titles, and au unblemished bowl-game record have vaulted the Mountaineers into lofty company.

And the Apps, who were 9-3 last season, will open their second season under head coach Shawn Clark on Thursday, September 2, at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.,  against East Carolina from the American Athletic Conference. App State is listed as an early 13.5 point favorite, according to 247Sports.com. 

This is the 32nd meeting between the schools with App State leading the series, 19-12. But the Pirates, led by former Lenior-Rhyne University, James Madison, and T.C. Roberson High coach Mike Houston (now in his third season with the Pirates), have won six straight against the Mountaineers. The last App State win came in Boone in 1975 by a score of 41-25.

This will be the first of four games between the schools. App State will also face ECU in Greenville in September 2024, play host to the Pirates in Boone in September 2025 and return to Greenville in September 2026.

App State's season opener will be televised on ESPNU at 7:30 p.m.
