BOONE - Both the Watauga High boy's and girl's teams have made the state playoffs. It's the first time that's happened since 2012-13.

The WHS girls (16-9), a No. 20 seed, travel to Winston-Salem to play Mount Tabor (18-8), the No. 13 seed overall, and the No. 2 seed in the Piedmont-Triad 3A Conference. It's also the first meeting between the schools in postseason play since 2008-09 (Mount Tabor won that game, 73-51).

The Spartans are led by head coach Rick Anderson, who is in his 14th year, and boasts a 264-83 record. And the Spartans feature a young roster with only two seniors on the team. They also have two freshmen playing up.

Senior Danielle White, and juniors Alexis Brooks and Ciara Wright are the backbone of the team offensively. The Spartans are averaging 52 points a game, offensively, and they're giving up 36 points a game, defensively. That number drops to 26 ppg in conference play.

The WHS boys (13-12) are in the state playoffs for the first time since 2015-16. They are the No. 32 seed and will play at top-seeded Southwest Guilford (26-0) from the Piedmont-Triad Conference Tuesday night. It's the first meeting ever between these schools. However, these schools have faced each other twice in the football playoffs (a 42--39 loss in triple overtime in 2015, and a 50-49 win the following season).

The Cowboys are a senior-dominated team with eight seniors on the roster. They're averaging 82 points a game, and they're shooting 52 percent from the floor. They have six players scoring in double figures, and four of them are averaging 20 points or more a game.

And both teams have one common opponent between them in Hickory. The Pioneers were swept by the Red Tornadoes this season in Northwestern Conference play, the Cowboys defeated Hickory 84-48 in the Martin Luther King Classic at Atkins High School in Winston-Salem on January 19.
