The Watauga Warriors 5th-grade girls travel basketball team took home their second tournament championship of the season this past weekend at the Bond Lets Ball tournament in Winston-Salem, NC.

The Warriors defeated the Carolina Elite, an Under Armour sponsored team from Durham, NC, in the opening round. The Warriors used their full court pressure to create havoc and jump out to a 15-8 half time lead. The Warriors were able to extend their lead in the second half to 21-8 before winning 25-15. The Warriors had 6 players score and were led in scoring by Kate Sears who finished with 15 points. Laney Shook, Kaitlyn Darner, Julie Matheson, and Katie Matheson each scored 2 points and Madelyn Trexler added 1 point.

The Warriors next game was against the Davie Thunder. The Warriors got off to a slow start and only led 8-5 at halftime. Their full court pressure finally got to the Thunder in the second half and the Warriors turned those turnovers into easy baskets to win 27-8. Sears led the Warriors in scoring with 21 points. Julie Matheson scored 4 points and Shook added 2 points.

The Warriors defeated the Pilot Press in the championship game. The Warriors didn't waste anytime, and thanks to their 1-2-2 full court pressure, jumped out to a 21-8 halftime lead. The Warriors, playing their third game in five hours, hung on to win 24-17. Sears led the Warriors in scoring with 13 points. Shook scored 4 points and Julie Matheson added 3 points. Katie Matheson and Darner also chipped in 2 points each.

The Warriors also received valuable contributions during the tournament from Malone Mencis, Mattie Durham, and Elizabeth Tilley. The Warriors played last weekend in Kingsport, TN and were able to get a 2nd place finish playing up in the 6th grade division. The Warriors will next play in Hickory on January 27th.
