With just two weeks to go until the much-anticipated season opener at Michigan, Appalachian State University football held what will likely be its final intrasquad scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

Both sides of the ball had bright spots in the evenly played 118-snap scrimmage. Appalachian State’s offense scored 17 points in 12 series that began at its own 35 yard line and tacked on 20 more points over nine possessions that started at the defense’s 35 yard line or closer. On the flip side, the defense forced two turnovers on the afternoon and was particularly good in the red zone, managing to keep the offense off the board three times in six series that started inside the 20.

Starting quarterback Kameron Bryant (Cary, N.C./Panther Creek) threw for 95 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Mountaineers offensively. Junior Ricky Fergerson (Fuquay-Varina, N.C./Fuquay-Varina) led all rushers with 66 yards and true freshman Jalin Moore (Shelby, N.C./Crest) continued his push to make the travel squad with 56 yards on a team-high 16 carries.

True freshman Mykelti Armstrong (Gastonia, N.C./Forestview) was the leading receiver with 40 yards while fellow true freshman, Isaiah Lewis (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest) led the Mountaineers with four receptions. Another newcomer at receiver, junior-college transfer Montez McGuire (Beech Island, S.C./North Augusta), made the play of the day when he seemingly came out of nowhere to leap high in front of two defenders and come down with an acrobatic touchdown catch on a 23-yard pass from Bryant.

Defensively, junior defensive lineman Ronald Blair (Greensboro, Ga./Greene County) continued his strong camp showing with three sacks. Nose tackle Tyson Fernandez (Fuquay-Varina, N.C./Fuquay-Varina) and true freshman Myquon Stout (China Grove, N.C./Jesse C. Carson) added two sacks apiece.

Sophomore inside linebacker John Law (Atlanta, Ga./Grady) and redshirt freshman outside linebacker Dustin Anderson (Hiddenite, N.C./Alexander Central) accounted for the Mountaineers’ two takeaways with an interception and fumble recovery, respectively.

Appalachian State will begin turning its focus almost exclusively to game-planning for the Aug. 30 opener at Michigan on Monday, when it holds its final day of fall camp. There will be no practice on Tuesday, which is the first day of class at App State, and the Mountaineers begin their regular-season practice routine on Wednesday. Practices are closed to the general public but check appstatesports.com on Monday for the final practice report of fall camp.
