That phrase best describes the Hickory Crawdads during their current five-game winning streak. The Crawdads scored three times in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday and defeated Geensboro 3-2 at L.P. Frans Stadium.
The win moves Hickory (70-48 overall; 29-20, second half of the South Atlantic League season) into a second-place tie with the Grasshoppers (73-46; 29-20) in the SAL's Northern Division. They also trail first-place Hagerstown by two games. The Suns blasted Kannapolis 9-4 Saturday night.
Joe Jackson ignited Hickory's ninth-inning rally. Zach Cone walked, and Travis Demeritte drove in Hickory's first run with a one-out, RBI single that made it, 2-1. Cone and Demeritte both advanced an extra base on the play. Cone went to third and Demeritte advanced to second base.
That set the stage for Marcus Greene, who came through with his first hit as a member of the Crawdads and tied the game with an infield single that just got by losing pitcher Tyler Kinley (3-1) that scored Cone with the tying run. Demeritte to move to third on the play.
Luis Marte, the ninth place hitter, drove in the game-winning run, when his ground ball to short scored Demeritte from third. Greensboro shortstop Rehiner Cordova saw Demeritte breaking for home, but Demeritte beat his throw. He slid around the tag of 'Hoppers catcher Brad Haynal to score the winning run.
The Grasshoppers jumped out to an early lead. They broke a scoreless tie in the fifth, plating two runs on four hits off of Hickory starting pitcher Frank Lopez to take a 2-0 lead. Greensboro starter Jarlin Garcia kept the Crawdads in check as he tossed five scoreless innings before relief pitcher Kyle Fischer and Miguel Del Pozo carried the shutout into the ninth inning.
Lopez, who had a no-decision, allowed two runs on five hits with a season high ten strikeouts over five innings. Hickory relievers Anyelo Leclerc and Ryne Slack took over from there, with the duo throwing a combined four shutout innings out of the bullpen. Slack (7-2) earned the win for the 'Dads after tossing a scoreless ninth.
The Crawdads won their third straight against the Grasshoppers in this series, and they picked up their seventh walk-off win of the year. The Crawdads wrrapu up their series with the Grasshoppers tonight at 5:00 p.m.
