The Hickory Crawdads kept their winning streak and their perfect record intact Tuesday night. The Crawdads (47-28 overall; 6-0 second half South Atlantic League) battled both the elements and the Kannapolis Intimidators at L.P. Frans Stadium.




And in the end, the Crawdads won their ninth consecutive game by knocking off Kannapolis, 11-10. Kellin Deglan saved the day with a grand slam in a seven-run sixth inning. Deglan's grand slam was the final blow in a walk-laden rally for the Crawdads that saw the team utilize just two hits and five walks to erase a four-run deficit and re-take the lead. The monster blast by Deglan was his second long ball of the night, with the former first round pick going 3-5 with two homers and seven RBI.


Despite a heavy rain, Ronald Guzman of the Crawdads ignited the rally with a lead-off walk. Jairo Beras followed with a double; , and Luis Marte walked to load the bases. That was followed by a complete meltdown by the Kannapolis bullpen. Three consecutive walks plated three runs, making it 8-7. Deglan followed and victimized Andrew Mitchell of the Intimidators on his eventual game-winning blow.


Kannapolis (32-41; 3-3) rallied to score twice in the top of the eighth thanks to a solo shot by Stringer, his second homer of the game, and an RBI single by Trey Michalczewski to cut the score to 11-10. But Josh McElwee came on with a runner on second and two outs to put out the fire. He retired the final four batters he faced to secure the win.


Following a 32-minute rain delay to the start of the game, Hickory jumped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to Deglan's first home run, a 3-run blast to right field in the first inning. The Crawdads added another run in the third on an RBI single by Lewis Brinson that gave Hickory a 4-0 lead.


A two-run homer by Danny Hayes of the Intimidators in the fourth made it 4-2; a four run fifth inning gave Kannapolis the lead, 6-4. Christian Stringer's two-run blast in the sixth made it 8-4, and it also set the stage for Deglan's heroics in the bottom of the inning.


Deglan's big night was aided by good games from Evan Van Hoosier, who was 1-3 with a double, two walks, an RBI, and three runs scored; Joe Jackson walked three times, hedrove in a run and he scored a run; Brinson was 2-5 with an RBI. Kannapolis pitching coughed up nine walks.


Pucetas (1-1) earned the win in relief win for the 'Dads. He allowing four runs on eight hits, a walk with four strikeouts. McElwee picked up his fifth save. The Crawdads and the Intimidators meet up again for an afternoon game Wednesday at 12:00 noon.
