Rising junior Joseph Lowder of Ashe County High tossed two scoreless innings and Brock Johnson of South Caldwell went 2-4 with a walk and a run-batted-in as Region 7 defeated Region 1 5-4 at BB&T

Field in Charlotte in the opening round of the High School Baseball Showcase at the North Carolina Powerade State Games.





Lowder gave up one hit and struck out three during his two-inning stint. Trailing 4-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, Neil Hudgins of Forbush got the game-winning rally started with a lead-off walk. Josh Ladowski of Lake Norman followed with an RBI triple that tied the game; Johnson walked putting runners on first and third before Brandon Langford of Davie County won the game with an RBI single.




Jeremiah Triplett of West Wilkes got the win in relief. Utah Jones of Watauga was 0-1 with a walk. Region 7 takes on Region 8 Friday night at 6:30 p.m., at UNC-Charlotte. Region 8 (0-1) lost ro Region 2 6-2 in its opening game Thursday night.




The High School Soccer Showcase begins Friday at Queens University. The West girls take on the North at 11 a.m., at the Queens Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park. Abby Carson, Heather Ostwalt and Kathryn Stevens of Watauga are playing for the West girls.
