Sophomore Will Altemueller was overpowering Monday night as Elkin, the No.5 seed, knocked off Ashe County, the No.4 seed, 8-0 in the opening-round of the Mountain Valley 1A-2A Conference Tournament in West Jefferson, N.C.




Altemueller tossed a complete-game, five-hit shutout against the Huskies. He walked one and stuck out ten. Matt Hamilton, Hunter Barnes, Joe Richardson, Alex Laws and Joseph Lowder had the Ashe County (9-11) hits. The Huskies also made six errors.


Elkin (7-14) snapped a scoreless tie with four runs in the fifth inning. And the Elks put the contest out of reach with three more runs in the seventh. Daniel Brinegar led Elkin going 3-4 with a run scored and a run-batted-in; Jackson Carter was 2-2 with two runs scored and an RBI; Tanner Edwards drove in two runs. The Elks made 12 hits.


Richardson suffered the loss. He coughed up four unearned runs on just three hits with four strikeouts. Ashe County, the No.3 seed among the Class 2A schools in the MV1A-2A, will open the state playoffs on the road against the No.1 seed from the Western Piedmont Athletic Conference next week.


NOTES: West Wilkes defeated the Ashe County softball team 15-0 Monday night in Millers Creek, N.C., in the first round of the MV1A-2A Conference Tournament. The Huskies, despite the loss, will open the state playoffs as the No.3 seed among the Class 2A schools in the MVC. And like the baseball team, Ashe County will play the No.1 seed from the Western Piedomnt Athletic Conference in the playoff opener.
