It was just a game the Watauga High girls' lacrosse team wasn't meant to win. The Pioneers (0-10 overall; 0-9 North Carolina Conference 7), who put

together one of their best efforts of the season, lost to Mount Tabor 11-10 on a last-minute goal in a NCC 7 game in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The Pioneers, who were in contention for the majority of the game, finally jumped on top to take a two-goal lead with just a few minutes left to play. But Mount Tabor (5-7; 4-3) rallied to tie the game.

"A couple unfortunate situations allowed them to tie it up," said WHS coach Holley Quick. "And then they scored one more with less than a minute left. We won the last draw, but we turned it over after getting it down the field. We lost, but the girls played beautifully, and I couldn't be more proud of them."

Ellie Sloboda was WHS' most aggressive player. The junior had nine shots on goal, scored four times and picked up an assist to pace WHS offensively. Courtney Kapral was right behind her. Kapral had eight shots, scored three goals with an assist. Cami Hastings scored twice; Katie Marks had a goal and two assists.

Kapral and Gabby Moody had four ground balls apiece; goaltender Meghan Bisignani faced 22 shots and made 10 saves. The Pioneers wrap up the regular season at home Friday night against West Forsyth at Leigh Wallace Memorial Field.

NOTES: There are no seniors on this years team, so the Pioneers will not be celebrating Senior Night.
