'Dads Rally Falls Short in 7-5 Loss PDF Print

The Hickory Crawdads played catch up on Saturday against the Asheville Tourists, but their comeback attempts finally fell short in a 7-5, ten-inning loss on Saturday at L.P. Fran Stadium.

Trailing 4-3, the Crawdads (5-5) pushed a run across in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. Nick Vickerson, who led off the inning with a single, was sacrificed to second and advanced to third on a ground out before he scored on a ball-four wild pitch to tie the game.

But the Tourists (6-4) responded with a three-run rally of their own in the top of the tenth to take a 7-4 lead. Crawdads reliever Felix Carvallo, who suffered the loss, coughed up a pair of home runs in the inning.

A solo shot by Corelle Prime to lead off the inning put the Tourists on top to stay, 5-4. A two-run blast by Patrick Valaika gave the Tourists their three-run cushion heading into the bottom of the tenth.

The Crawdads put two runners aboard in the bottom of the inning with Eduard Pinto at the plate representing the tying run.

A fielder's choice retired Urbanus at third. With runners at the corners and one out, Nomar Mazara flied deep to center field for the second out before Vickerson belted an RBI single that made it, 7-5. But Travis Demeritte flied out to end the game.

Vickerson was 3-5 with two runs scored and a RBI, Kevin Torres went 2-4 with a home run, and Juremi Profar finished 1-4 with his long ball. Brinson also had a good game, going 2-4 with a walk and a stolen base.

Asheville closer Dylan Stamey (1-0) earned the win despite blowing the save in the ninth. Fellow reliever Logan Norris picked up his first save.

The Crawdads and Tourists will wrap up their 4-game series on Sunday evening at 5:00 pm.
