App State Softball Splits DH at Elon PDF Print

Coming off of two great offensive outputs in a doubleheader at East Tennessee State on Tuesday, the Appalachian State University softball team earned a split on Saturday at Elon.

The Mountaineers (16-23 overall, 4-9 Sourthern Conference) captured game one, 4-0. Dani Heichen (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Pembroke Pines Charter) scored the game's first run on Cara Parker's single for a 1-0 lead. Heichen was a team best 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the opener.

Winning pitcher Alissa Schoelkopf (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) made it stand up as she tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout. She struck out seven tossing her fourth complete game of the season. Schoelkopf has gone the distance 21st times in her career. Her seven strikeouts gives her 232 in her career, just five shy of moving into sole possession of fifth place all-time in program history.

Ashley Seering's (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) run-scoring single and an error basically put the game out of reach in the fifth. Sarah Warnock had an RBI single in the seventh.

Warnock was 1-3 with an RBI.; Gomez finished 2-3 with a run scored and Seering also collected two hits in four trips.

But in game two, the Mountaineers saw their season-high three-game winning streak (they've done it twice this season) come to an end in a 5-3 loss.

Elon (21-19; 4-10) opened up a 3-0 lead in game two, thanks Lauen Oldham's two-run in the first inning and Aly Quintana's solo home run in the sixth.

But the Apps rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game. Lindsay Loudermilk had a run-scoring single, an error, and fielder's choice RBI by Warnock tied the game.

But Carleigh Nester derailed Appalachian's rally with a walk-off, two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh.

Sydney Laws suffered the loss in game two, event though Schoelkopf, the third pitcher used by App State in game two, served up the gopher ball to Nester. Laws is 4-6 on the year.

The two teams wrap up their SoCon series with a 1 p.m. game this afternoon.
