Appalachian State University men’s tennis earned a first-round bye and will face No. 5 Samford in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Southern Conference Championships, the league announced on Saturday.




The Mountaineers (9-12, 6-3 SoCon) will take on the Bulldogs (8-9, 5-3) at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 17 at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.


Whichever squad wins the quarterfinal showdown will face either No. 1 Elon (16-4, 9-0), No. 8 Davidson (5-16, 2-7) or No. 9 Chattanooga (6-13, 1-8) in the semifinals at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 18.


Appalachian finished the regular season with two wins in its final three matches and defeated Samford by a 4-3 final when the teams met on March 2 in Birmingham, Ala.


Appalachian State University women’s tennis earned the No. 7 seed in next week’s Southern Conference Tournament and will face No. 10 Western Carolina in the first round, the league office announced Saturday.


The Mountaineers (8-15, 3-6 SoCon) closed the regular season on a three-match winning streak that included league wins over the Catamounts (2-17-1, 0-9) and Wofford (5-15, 1-8).


Appalachian and WCU will square off at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16 and the winner will advance to play No. 2 Samford (18-2, 8-1) in the quarterfinals on April 17 at 5 p.m. at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
