Western Carolina University junior J.T. Poston, who played at Hickory High School, has been named the Southern Conference men’s golfer of the week for all competition from March 5-11. The selection is made

by the league office.



Poston tied for fifth at Auburn’s Tiger Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, firing a 211 over the three rounds at the Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Ala. The 15-team, 81-golfer field featured three top-50 teams in No. 28 Auburn, No. 42 Kennesaw State and No. 38 Memphis.


Poston fired a 6-under-par 66 in the first round and followed that up with a 1-over 73 to sit in a tie for third after the first day of competition. The Hickory, N.C., native turned in an even-par 72 in Tuesday’s final round for his final position and a 70.33 stroke average for the week.


The top-five finish was Poston’s sixth of the season. Poston won conseutive state championships in 2010 and 2011 during his junior and senior years at Hickory.


Also nominated: Casey Komline (Appalachian State), Bryce Howell (Furman), Roy Dixon (UNCG), Chris Robb (Chattanooga) and Chandler Brazeal (Wofford).
