Bears Earn Split With Mount Olive PDF Print

The Lenoir-Rhyne University Softball Team (1-1) opened the 2014 campaign with a doubleheader split with Mount Olive (2-2) Friday at Bears Field. The Trojans shut the Bears out, 2-0, in the first game while L-R won the second contest, 5-1.



Game One - Mount Olive 2, Lenoir-Rhyne 0

The Trojans' Madison Johnston (Wilmington, N.C.) (1-0) limited the Bears to just two hits in picking up the shutout victory.


Mount Olive's Katie Moore (Cary, N.C.) drove in both runs in the third and fifth innings, respectively, and finished with three hits in the contest. Moore opened the scoring with an RBI triple in the third frame.


Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore Maryann Hoskins (Havelock, N.C.) (0-1) suffered the loss despite allowing just two runs to go along with nine strikeouts.


Game Two - Lenoir-Rhyne 5,, Mount Olive 1

Senior shortstop Jody Mizelle (Colerain, N.C.) hit a two-run home run and sophomore Brandi Hole (Sandy Ridge, N.C.) allowed just one run on the mound as the Bears salvaged the split.


Mizelle's round-tripper opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning while Hole (1-0) scattered nine hits to go along with eight strikeouts.


Lenoir-Rhyne freshman first baseman Sydney Landreth (Disputanta, Va.) added an RBI single for Bears, who won despite finishing with just four hits in the game.


Mount Olive hurt itself defensively in the contest, totaling three errors and three unearned runs.


Kalie Smith (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) drove in Mount Olive's lone run in the sixth inning with a bunt single while Lauren Smith (Clinton, N.C.) suffered the loss and fell to 0-2 on the season.


Lenoir-Rhyne faces Mercyhurst (Pa.) in a doubleheader Sunday at 1:00 p.m., at Bears Field.
