The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball Team (15-5, 10-4) continued its surge with a 68-57 victory over Brevard (5-13, 4-10) Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference game at Shuford Memorial

Gymnasium.

 

 

L-R junior guard Jazmine Charles (Lexington, N.C.), the league's leading scorer, finished with a game-high 24 points to go along with 11 rebounds while junior guard Jenni Gust (Colfax, Wis.) added 20 points as the Bears improved to 10-1 in their last 11 games.

 

Brevard's Madison Lenox (Raleigh, N.C.) finished with a team-high 13 points while Chelsea Turner (Hickory, N.C.) added 12 points to go along with three treys but the Tornados suffered their third straight loss.

 

Lenoir-Rhyne led by as many as 22 points in the first half on a three-pointer by Charles for a 33-11 advantage with 2:11 remaining before the break and kept a double-digit advantage throughout the rest of the game to sweep the season series from the Tornados.

 

Lenoir-Rhyne held a 48-25 advantage on the boards as well and limited Brevard to just 35 percent shooting (20-of-57) for the game in improving to 17-0 all-time against the Tornados. L-R also remained one game out of first place in the league standings behind Wingate.

 

Lenoir-Rhyne, winners of four straight contests, hit the road to face Coker in its next South Atlantic Conference game on Wednesday in Hartsville, S.C., at 6:00 p.m. Meanwhile, Brevard takes on Mars Hill on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m., as well in Mars Hill, N.C.

 

 

Lenoir-Rhyne Men Nip Brevard, 60-59

 

 

The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Basketball Team (10-8, 9-5) scored the last six points of regulation to stun Brevard (3-15, 3-11), 60-59, Saturday evening at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium in a South Atlantic Conference game.

 

L-R junior guard R.J. McClure (Canton, N.C.) scored a team-high 16 points and hit the game-winning free throws with 15 seconds left and the Bears made one final stand on the Tornados in the win.

 

Brevard, which lost its seventh straight game, received a game-high 17 points from Darius Moose (Salisbury, N.C.) and the Tornados, as a team, hit nine treys despite the loss. Jake Pifer (Watauga High) played 29 minutes. He scored three points, had three rebounds and a steal.

 

The contest was close throughout, with six ties and eight lead changes, as the Tornados held a 30-29 advantage at the break.

 

Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore forward Rob Noyes (Morganton, N.C.) scored 10 points and senior guard Jarvis Perry (Willingboro, N.J.) tallied eight points, six assists and 10 rebounds and the Bears' defense held the Tornados without a point in the final 3:05 of the contest.

 

Lenoir-Rhyne also improved to 8-0 at home this year and increased its winning streak to 11 games at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium dating back to last season. In addition, the Bears swept the season series from the Tornados.

 

In the next round of South Atlantic Conference games on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m., Lenoir-Rhyne travels to Hartsville, S.C., to face Coker while Brevard faces Mars Hill on the road.
