Pioneers Stumble At Newton-Conover PDF Print

The Watauga High wrestling team went 1-4 at the Newton-Conover Duals in Newton, N.C. The Pioneers defeated South Lake for their only win of the day. They lost to Davie County, Newton Conover, South Stokes and Enka.


"We're still not at full strength due to holiday travel and sickness," said WHS coach Todd Allan. "I would love to see what we could do at full strength."


Mark Townsend went 5-0 at 120 pounds and improved his record to 15-1 on the year against a very competitive field on Saturday. Demetre Kostis, went 4-1 at 132 pounds, and he suffered his first loss of the season.


Kostis lost to Franklin Wepner of Newton Conover, 4-1. Wepner finished third at the Class 2A state tournament last season. Kostis defeated Wepner 7-1 a couple of weeks ago at cornelius-Hough. Kostis is now 26-1 overall.


The Pioneers travel to Chapel Hill for the Tiger Classic Friday and Saturday.
