The Lees-McRae College athletic department and Taft, Taft, and Haigler, PA of Greenville, N.C. have formed a unique partnership this winter, joining forces to
sponsor the $20,000 Beat-the-Clock Challenge during halftime of every men’s basketball game in Williams Gymnasium this season.
“Our new Board of Trustee, Ken Haigler and I discussed ways to generate more excitement to our men’s basketball program and this idea formed from it,” said Vice-President for Atheltics Craig McPhail. “We are certainly hoping to give away the money, while drawing a lot of students, fans, families and members of the community.”
The premise of the contest is simple: if the chosen contestant makes a layup, a free throw, a three-point shot, and a half court shot within a 30-second time limit, he/she wins $20,000. So far this season, the Bobcats have sent two contestants onto the floor for their shot at the $20,000 prize, holding the contest during halftime of Lees-McRae’s two contests in the 2013 Americourt Hotels Basketball Classic on the weekend of November 22 and 23.
“This is a really great opportunity to watch NCAA college basketball in a very fun, healthy and entertaining venue while supporting our local college and it’s athletic department,” McPhail said.
In order to qualify for the contest, each contestant cannot be a current or former professional basketball player. The contestant also cannot be a current or former high school varsity or NCAA intercollegiate basketball player that has played in a high school varsity or NCAA intercollegiate basketball game within the past five years.
Interested contestants can sign up and submit a registration sheet at the ticket table in the front lobby during the first half of each men’s game. The next chance to win the prize is this coming Tuesday, December 10 when the Bobcats take on Emory & Henry College in their final home game of 2013. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
