The Lees-McRae College men's soccer team continues to maintain a strong presence in the local community, sending a group of nine players to Yellow Mountain Enterprises in Newland, N.C. on
Thursday, December 5 in an effort to reach out and help local businesses who make a positive impact on the surrounding area.
Captains James Smith (Eastbourne, England) and Thomas Rusling (Sheffield, England) organized and coordinated the trip, and along with teammates James Abraham (Maidstone, England), Jordan Wright (West Lothian, Scotland), Marvyn Rieger (Frankfurt, Germany), Taylor Morton (Pinehurst, N.C.), Alex Hasler (Browns Summit, N.C.), Avery Varley (Raleigh, N.C.) and Jacob Copeland (Raleigh, N.C.), took time out of their busy class schedule to spend time with a cornerstone of the local community.
"Having worked with the group over the past semester, I thought that as a team, it would be a great experience for the team to meet some of the people at Yellow Mountain and interact with the local community," said Smith. "As student-athletes, we know we are in a privileged position, which makes it even more important to give something back. I'm sure it will be a bond and a friendship between Lees-McRae men's soccer and Yellow Mountain that will last for many years."
Smith and Rusling have been working with them throughout the semester as part of their Adaptive PE class, where they've been coming in weekly when we've been teaching PE classes. Went over there and joined in with activities such as video games, craft making, and a facility tour.
"It's great to keep in touch with the community and we're going to try to make more of an effort from now on," said Rusling. "The lads enjoyed themselves and it was a really humbling experience. The folks at Yellow Mountain are a great group of people, and we want Lees-McRae men's soccer's role in our community to continue to grow."
