Pioneer Swimmers Win Four Events PDF Print

The Watauga High swimming team turned in another gutsy performance Wednesday night at the Lenior Aquatic Center in Lenior, N.C. South Caldwell hosted the

Northwestern 3A/4A Conference meet.

The WHS girls defeated Freedom, 65-28, and Hibriten, 60-34. WHS' perfect night was ruined, however, with a 61-33 loss against South Caldwell.

The Pioneers won three events, and they turned in four second-place finishes.

Anne Taylor led the way by winning two events---the 100-meter butterfly (in 1:03.76) and the 100 backstroke (1:08.0).

Taylor was also a member of the 200-medley relay (Vines, Silver, and Wilson, her teammates), and the 400-freestyle relay team (Allain, Vines and Silver).

Both those squad finished second (2:03.83 in the 200 medley and 4:13.09 in the 400 freestyle). Allain, Vines and Wilson were also members of the 200 freestyle relay team (Hayler was the fourth member of that squad) finished second in 1:58.17.

Juliana Silver finished second in the 200-freestyle (2:11.76) and in the 100-breaststroke (1:14.65).

Dakota Wilson finished third in the 100 freestyle (1:08.96) and the 50-freestyle (28.92).

"Coming off the Thanksgiving holidays and weather issues, I felt we did fairly well," WHS coach David Gragg said.  "Anne Taylor turned in a great swim in the 100 Fly.  Her time puts her within reach of the school record.  Backstroke isn't her primary stroke, and she still won the event.  Julianna Silver had good swims in the 200 Free and 100 Breast.  Cheyenne Hayler is starting to drop time in her events which is good to see in her senior year."

The WHS boys were bested by Freedom, 54-40, and South Caldwell, 56-37. The Pioneers defeated Hibriten, 54-35.

Nick Woody picked up WHS' only win on Wednesday night. He won the 100-backstroke in 1:01.78. Woody also had a second-place finish in the 200-freestyle (1:59.50).

Reed Conner finished second in the 50-freestyle (24.10) and the 100-butterfly (1:03.66). Joel Brown finished second in the 100-freestyle (57.25), and WHS finished second in the 200-freestyle relay (1:39.28). Woody, Brown, Ben Watson and Conner were members of that squad.

WHS had a third-place finish in the 200-medley (1:58.20). Conner, Watson, Woody, Brown made up that team; Broiwn finished third in the 200 IM (2:28.25) and Watson finished third in the 100-breaststroke (1:128.91).

"Nick Woody split two close races, " Gragg said.  "He barely lost the 200 Free but had a great second half of his 100 Back to pull out the win.  South Caldwell is a tough team to beat, and we have not seen Freedom since they left the conference a few years ago.  Their team is stronger than I imagined.   Swimming the conference favorites (St. Stephens - Women/ South Caldwell - Men) in back-to-back meets is a tough challenge.  We still have a long way to go before the conference meet in January."

The Pioneers travel to Hickory next Wednesday, December 11 for a NW3A/4A Conference meet with St. Stephens.
