Wiseman Gets First Career Win PDF Print

Matt Wiseman, who was a teacher and a basketball coach at Watauga High School, picked up his first win as a varsity basketball coach Tuesday night.


Wiseman, who was named the new girl's basketball coach at Avery after Missy Lyons stepped down after 11 years as head coach last spring, led the Vikings to a 57-48 win against Ashe County at Huskies Gym in West Jefferson, N.C.


Kylie Polsgrove, who paced Avery (1-0) at the Class 1A state championships last spring, and Lauren Burelson paced Avery with 16 points apeice. Katie Rigdon had eight points. Morgan Hudler led Ashe County (0-1) with 16 points; Paige Spell had 15 points.


Wiseman was the head coach of the WHS freshman and junior varsity teams, he was a varsity assistant coach. He was an assistant coach at Avery last season.


"I learned a lot from Rob Sanders (current WHS coach), when I was at Watauga and from Missy here at Avery," Wiseman said. "So, I've been blessed. I've finally been given a chance to be a head coach at the varsity level, and I'm getting to do it at my alma mater."


Wiseman played basketball for Kenny Ward at Avery. The Vikings (1-0) won the boy's game, 58-37. Jordan Waldroop led the way with 11 points; Dylan Barr had ten points. Cullen Ashley led the Huskies with 12 points.


Avery plays its home opener against Cloudland (TN.) next Tuesday night; Ashe County entertains North Surry Friday night
