The Watauga Storm sixth grade boys basketball team finished third this past weekend in the West Wilkes Whirlies Foothills Fall Classic. The Storm played against a field of eight teams including two of the
better sixth grade travel teams in the state. The Storm finished with two wins and one loss in the tournament.
The Watauga Storm defeated the Catawba Valley Thunder 54-38 in their opening game. The Storm built a commanding double-digit halftime lead, thanks to a stifling man to man full court trapping defense. The Storm, which was never seriously challenged in this game, cruised home with an easy win. Jaiden Bond led the Storm in scoring with 17 points. Anderson Castle chipped in with 13 points; Andrew Freeman had ten.
In their next game, the Storm nearly duplicated their previous effort as they jumped out to a quick lead against the Lenior Topcats. They built a 27-8 lead late in the first half, and won the game going away, 46-29. Anderson Castle led the Storm with 15 points; Jackson Miller chipped in with eight points.
Those win moved the Storm into the semifinal round, when they played the Pilot Press, one of the better sixth grade teams in the state. Despite the Pilot Press' superior size, the Storm grabbed an early lead, thanks to a pressure defense that forced some early turnovers. But the Press managed to recover and led 28-15 at halftime. Pilot Press was able to expand its lead in the second half and eventually won, 56-25. Bond and Jordan Gainey each had eight points apiece.
Other key contributors to the Storm throughout the weekend were Jake Sears (6 points in the tournament), Daylon Banks (2 points in the tournament), Austin Idol, Mitchell Greene, Bryce Satterfield (6 points in the tournament), Jake Watson, and Alex Darner (5 points in the tournament).
