Appalachian State University men’s soccer grabbed a win on Senior Night in a non-conference match against the Longwood Lancers, 2-1. The Apps honored Harrison Delbridge (Raleigh, N.C./Needham Brougton) and Danny Free (Doncaster, England/Hall Cross School) before the game.

The Mountaineers (4-7-6) will now head into Saturday’s match on a high note. App State will travel to Elon for a Southern Conference quarterfinal game with kick off set for 7 p.m.

The Lancers (7-7-3) got on the board early on in the match on Tuesday scoring in the eighth minute. Off of a Lee Martin corner kick, Patrick McDaniel got a head on the ball towards the back post and put it past Free for the 1-0 advantage. Free made two saves on the night he was honored by the men’s soccer program.

Appalachian would net the equalizer in the 39th minute on a fantastic head ball from Donovan Japp (Oakridge, N.C./Northwest Guilford) for his fourth goal of the year. The header was set up by a perfect cross from Alex Herbst on the far side of the field.

The Mountaineers would get the game-winning goal from Tommy Labriola (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) on his first of the season. Japp brought the ball down the sideline and was able to find Labriola in the middle of the box with the keeper pulled out of his net. Labriola was able to finish it off for a 2-1 Mountaineer advantage. Carl Carpenter started in net for the Lancers and made two saves.

App State outshot Longwood 10 to five, including four shots on target for the Mountaineers. Appalachian also held the advantage in corner kicks seven to five.

The Mountaineers will travel to Elon, N.C. to face the No. 2 seeded Phoenix in the first round of the SoCon tournament on Saturday. Kick off set for 7 p.m. Elon defeated App State earlier in the season in Elon, 1-0.
