The Watuaga High volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss Wednesday night at Craft Gymnasium in Hickory. The Red Tornadoes, who swept the season series against WHS this season, defeated WHS, 25-14, 25-
20, 25-14 in a Northwestern 3A/4A Conference game.
The loss also snapped WHS' four-game winning streak in league play. It was WHS' first conference loss since September 23 (against St. Stephens).
Sarah Petersen led WHS (13-8 overall; 7-6 NW3A/4A) with 13 kills and two blocks in Wednesday night's loss. Sarah Combs had ten assists, Kiersten McClannon had 13 digs and Rebecca Hayes had five kills and five blocks.
Pioneers return home to play South Caldwell Monday night. It will also be Senior Night at Lentz-Eggers Gym. A win Monday night, and the Pioneers (the No.4 seed overall) will clinch the No.1 seed among the Class 4A schools in the NW3A/4A Conference. It will also guarantee the Pioneers a home game in the opening-round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 4A state playoffs, which begin next Saturday, October 19.
Hickory won the junior varsity match, 2-1 (25-10, 18-25, 25-14). Savannah Rusher led the way for WHS with seven assists. Reina Marze had three aces and five assists. Callie Idol had three aces, five digs and four kills; Brynne Gould had five kills.
