The Appalachian District Health Department reports that they are open in spite of the federal government shutdown now in its second week. Clients are encouraged to continue seeking WIC services helping Women, Infants, and Children and utilize program benefits. Jennifer Greene, Director of Allied Health Services, said, “We are grateful for the state operations managed at the NC Division of Public Health and NC DHHS that have allowed us to continue serving families since October 1 despite the federal government shut down. We just learned that we will be implementing a waiting list for supplemental food support for all program participants who are currently enrolled and new participants who are eligible for WIC effective tomorrow, October 9th.”  She said, “ Participants and those who may be eligible are strongly encouraged to continue coming to our office as we will be avoiding any further delays to these families while also providing important healthcare referrals while we wait for a resolution to this matter.”  This new change will not affect businesses who are accepting WIC benefits as those already issued will be processed as usual. Appalachian District Health Department will be providing additional information to WIC participants about additional community resources as usual during this time.  You can stay connected with up-to-date information by liking Appalachian District Health Department on facebook or logging on to www.apphealth.com.
