The Watauga High boy's and girl's cross country teams competed in the Wendy's Invitational Saturday at McAlpine Park in Charlotte, N.C.
The WHS girls finished 22nd as a team with 527 points. The Pioneers had two runners finish in the top 50,
Celia Jackson was their top finisher. She was 43rd in a very competitive field. She crossed the finish line in 19-minutes, 48-seconds. Kathleen Mansure of the Pioneers was 47th in 19:58.
Charlotte-Myers Park won the invitational race with 87 points; Allie Klimkiewicz of Oakton High School (Vienna, Va.) won the invitational race in 17:34. Kayla Montgomery of Mount Tabor finished second in 17:42..
For the boy's, WHS finished 22nd with 549 points; Michael Holland was their highest finisher. He came in 61st place, completing the race with an impressive time of 16:54. Will Vandenberg of the Pioneers was 95th in 17:12.
Ian Miller of Mount Tabor paced the field by winning the race in the blistering time of 15:23. Only four seconds seperated the top four runners. Tenis Baldwin of East Henderson finished second in 15:25; Ryan Brady of East Chapel Hill finished third in 15:27.
Apex won the boy's invitational with a team score of 135.
Zack Cole of the Pioneers finished 69th (19:19) in the boy's junior/senior race; Finley Collins came in 67th (23:28) in the girl's freshman/sophomore race.
The Pioneers will compete in the United Way Invitational in Conover, N.C., on Wednesday.
