Appalachian State University men’s soccer played host to the No. 17 nationally ranked Furman Paladins on Sunday afternoon. The Mountaineers (2-1-6, 0-0-1) got on the board first in the 26th minute. Alex

Herbst sent a cross into the box that Donovan Japp was able to get his head on for his third goal of the season. Sven Lissek started for Furman in net and made three saves and allowing one goal.

App State would maintain its 1-0 advantage for nearly 50 minutes of game time. It was then in the 76th minute that Furman (7-1-1, 0-0-1) found an answer. Clint Ritter crossed a ball into the box that Tyler Peoples headed in for the equalizing goal for the Paladins.

Danny Free started for the Apps and made six saves allowing just the one goal. The remaining time in regulation would remain a 1-1 tie. Both teams saw scoring chances in the overtime periods, but couldn’t punch one through.

Furman outshot App State by a lopsided 22-7 margin, but held just a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Paladins had ample opporunities from corner kicks leading 15-3 in that category.

The defense for the Mountaineers was outstanding all day long. The Paladins threatened many times and App State received great defensive play from the likes of Harrison Delbridge, Patrick Harrow, Kojo Thompson, Jackson Allen, as well as, the mids and forward coming back to the ball and providing more bodies and depth in the effort.

The draw for the Mountaineers is the sixth of the season, which ties an all-time record for ties in a season set in 1983. The Mountaineers will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Elon for their second conference match of the season. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
