Appalachian State University field hockey suffered a loss to Rider on Sunday in a neutral site match, 6-2. The Broncs started the match strong, putting four goals on the
board from Sandra Penas, Carolina Vergroesen and Nicole Hareau in the first 20 minutes, making the score 4-0.
Junior defender Laura Malinoski found the net for the Apps in the 25th minute of the match, netting her first goal of the season. Senior Emily Knapp and sophomore Hanna French would record the assist off of the penalty corner. Rider would score once more before the half with a goal from Penas, finding the net for the third time in the match.
The Broncs would continue to rally in the second half, tallying a goal off the stick of Nicole Hareau, her second of the day. The Mountaineers would respond with a goal French, with an assist from Lindsay Amador, but it would not be enough as the Black and Gold fell 6-2.
Appalachian recorded 10 shots to Rider’s 28 in the match. Both teams had the same number of penalty corners, with six each. Sophomore Caroline Phillips tallied four shots on the day, while junior Dana Wetmore recorded two for the Apps.
Senior goalkeeper Sarah Anderson registered 14 saves for the Mountaineers in her 67 minutes of play. App State will return to action against NorPac foe Radford in Radford, Va on Sept. 28.
