The Watauga High girl's tennis team won its Northwestern 3A/4A Conference opener by crushing
Patton 8-1 Wednesday night in Morganton, N.C.
The only blemish, Meredith Smith dropped her match at No.1 singles. It was Smith's second straight loss. She was bested by Taylor Fredrickson of the Panthers in straight sets, 4-6, 5-7. But from that point on, the Pioneers (4-2 overall; 1-0 NW3A/4A), who snapped a two-match losing streak, were in complete control.
Meghan Smith got things started at No.2 singles as she defeated Sarah Crisp, 6-0, 6-0. Nicole Fox, Kelsi Kanoy, Liz Clark and Annika Davidson all posted straight set victories that gave WHS a commanding 5-1 lead heading into doubles play.
And Meredith Smith got some revenge as she teamed up with Fox for an 8-1 win at No.1 doubles over Fredrickson and Sallie McCurry of the Panthers.
The Pioneers travel to Asheville (weather permitting) for a non-conference match today at 4 p.m. They return home to play Hickory on Monday.
