The University of Virginia baseball team kept its national championship hopes alive Thursday night.

The Cavaliers (56-11) defeated the California 8-1 in an elimination game at the College World Series at Ameritrade Park in Omaha, NE. The Cavaliers broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning.
Tyler Wilson handcuffed the Bears, scattering five hits and striking out five in 7 2/3 innings of work. Kenny Swab and Keith Werman each had two hits; John Barr drove in two runs. The Bears (38-23) made two errors.
The win moves Virginia into a semifinal match up Friday night against South Carolina at 7 pm. The Gamecocks, defending national champions, defeated Virginia on Tuesday.
