Former Beaver Creek High School athlete Andy Cheek was recently elected to the Ashe County Sports Hall Of Fame.

Cheek, a three-sport athlete during his prep days in the mid 1990s, was inducted with the Class of 2011 on April 30. Cheek, who played his college baseball at Appalachian State University, was a two-time All-State selection in baseball. He was also named honorable mention on the USA Today's High School All-America team in 1996. And he a two-time Player of the Year (1995 and 1996) in football in the old Blue Ridge Conference.
Cheek, who led ASU in hitting in 1999, was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 18th round of the Major League Baseball draft right out of high school. But he bypassed pro ball to play at ASU. Following his college career, Cheek signed with the Boston Red Sox. Unfortunately, his professional career was cut short by injuries.
Basketball players Steve Rash (Northwest Ashe, 1966-69) and Anne Shoemaker McGuire (Beaver Creek, 1955-59), and golfer Tony Dickson (Ashe Central), who turned in a stellar career at ASU, were also inducted into the Ashe County Hall Of Fame.
