WHS Women Finish Second, Men Are 7th At Regionals PDF Print

The Watauga High women's track team posted a second-place finish on Saturday at the Class 4A Western Regional at Providence High School in Charlotte.


The WHS women racked up 82 points and finished 11 points behind T.C. Roberson, which won the regional championship with 93 points. The WHS men finished seventh with 42 points; Charlotte Vance paced the field with 89 points. The WHS women had three regional champions.
Julia Roberts won the 800-meter run in the time of 2:20.68; Darby Middlebrook won the 3200-meter run in the time of 11:08.15. She was also second in the 1600 (5:04.50). Brooke Gordon of TCR bested the field in 5:03.92. Sydney Cook won the pole vault event with an effort of 11-feet, six-inches.
Kasey Jones finished second in the 100-meter-hurdles. She had a time of 15.19; Cheyenne Hutchinson of Hopewell won the regional title in the time of 14.72. WHS finished third in the 4x800-meter relay (9:31.95) and fifth in the 4x400 (4:07.99). Debra Dommermuth was third in the pole vault (10-6); Cook was fourth in the high jump (5-2); and Laura Gulliver was fifth in the high jump (5-0) and fifth in the pole vault (10-6).
On the men's side, Reid Harris won the pole vault with an effort of 13-6. Max Ruble was fifth with a jump of 12 feet. Jake Pifer finished second in the high jump (6-2); Peter Vandenberg was third in the 3200 (9:57.15) and Jordan Pineda finished second in the discus (147-01) and fifth in the shot put (49-2).
The state finals will be held Saturday at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro. The competition begins at 10 am.
