The State Wrestling Tournament begins its final day of competition on Saturday at the Greensboro Coliseum.

And of the nine wrestlers that represented the High Country when the competition began Thursday night, only four remain---three from Ashe County and one from Avery. Micheal Elliott of Ashe County at 119 pounds and Joshua Wineberg of the Huskies at 215 pounds are both in the semifinal round in Class 2A. Elliott (29-7) advanced to the final four by defeating Coleman Carter of Newton-Conover, 8-4. He now goes up against Andrew Molina of Randleman in the semifinals on Saturday. Molina is 34-7.
Wineberg (27-7) goes against Joseph Graves (43-4) of Topsail in his semifinal bout at 215 pounds. Wineberg advanced to the semifinal round by pinning Adam Kuchta of Croaton in 3:35.
Dakota Elliott was not as fortunate. He lost his second-round quarterfinal match in the 130 pound division to Jake Nelson of Bandys 11-4. Elliott bounced back from that loss and has marched himself into a third-place semifinal match.
Following a first-round bye in the consolation bracket, he pinning Brandon Hoskins of Randleman in 4:02 and followed that up by blanking Chris Bock of Wheatmore, 9-0. He will face the loser of Robbie Gladwell (Croatan) or Austin Collins (North Surry) in the third-place match on Saturday afternoon.
The Vikings have two wrestlers still alive in Class 1A. Brock Yackey, who won a regional title last weekend, is in the semifinals after he defeated Chad Hoff of Pamlico County 9-6 in his first-round match. Yackey (32-7) takes on Jamie Lemon (44-5) of Central Academy in the semifinals. Unfortunately, Lucas Lecka was eliminmated on the first day of competition.
He lost his first-round match to Robert Overton of Red Springs. Overton pinned Lecka (29-8) in 58 seconds. Then Lecka forfeited his consolation match to Will Grindstaff of Robbinsville to finish out his season.
Watauga High did not fair well on Friday in Class 4A. Both of its entrees---Demetree Kostis and Gus Coffey ---were eliminated on the first day of competition. Coffey (103), a fourth-place finisher at regionals last week, had a tough draw in his first-round match. He lost by pinfall to Mitch Goldbach (43-0) of Wake Forest-Rollesville by pinfall in 4:53. He bounced back from that setback by defeating Greg Hinton of Jack Britt 11-6 in the first round of consolations. But he was eliminated by Robbie Tomasic of Durham-Jordan 11-0 in his second consolation match, ending his season at 35-9.
Kostis dropped both of his matches Friday at 125 pounds. Bradley Stewart of Scotland County pinned Kostis in ten seconds in their first-round match. And Kostis was later eliminated as he dropped a 4-1 decision to Wesley Parsley of Kernersville Glenn in the consolation round. Kostis finished his season with a 39-10 record.
The tournament wraps up Sarturday with the finals beginning at 5 pm.
