Mariadele Knoll Gridley, age 87, of Sparta, NC passed away Friday, March 19, 2021 at her residence.

She was born October 15, 1933 in North Vernon, Indiana to the late Clifford E. and Isabel Marie Bott Knoll. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Gordon B. Gridley; her father and mother-in-law, Cecil G. and Mildred J. Gridley. She grew up and spent most of her life in south Florida and retired to Sparta, NC in 2006. She married Gordon in 1953 at the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Mariadele was involved in numerous volunteer groups wherever she went. In Ft. Lauderdale, FL, she helped start Insight for the Blind, manned the teletype for the deaf at home, both sponsored by Southern Bell; volunteered as a professional certified clown at many fund raising events; helped start CERT (Citizens Emergency Response Team) as well as, UP with HOPE, DOWN with DOPE and Telephone Pioneers of America (volunteer network). In Sparta, NC, she volunteered at Alleghany Thrift Store and the Sparta Senior Center and continued to work with her son Bruce in their rock climbing business, traveling to festivals and fairs until she was 82 years old. She worked outside the home much of her life, first at Lauderdale Manors where her four children attended school and later in banking at Tropical Telco Credit Union and Central Bank in Ft. Lauderdale. She retired from Northside Elementary in 2006 were our father attended school in the 1930’s. She is survived by her immediate family: eldest son, Clifton Gridley, eldest daughter, Gwen Gridley McKirahan and husband Robert, daughter, Denise Gridley, son, Bruce Gridley and Charlene Frazier; grandchildren, Gregg Kettlehut and wife Shannon, Kelly McKirahan and husband Gary Weiland, Katie McKirahan, Tara Diane DeYoung; great-grandchildren, Sebastian Willem Kettlehut and Elliot Richard Weiland; niece, Cindy Benham Roessel.
