Roy Edward “Red” Carlton, age 72, of Boomer, passed away Monday, February 1, 2021 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Medical.

Mr. Carlton was born February 15, 1948 in Wilkes County to the late Roy Isaac and Sophronia Horton Carlton. Roy attended Lincoln Heights, graduated from Wilkes Central High School and received a degree in masonry from Wilkes Community College. He worked in the furniture industry in Lenoir at Broyhill Furniture; was a sub-contractor for over a decade for BROC, serving Wilkes, Alleghany and Ashe County; and retired from Tyson Foods. Roy was a dedicated member of Thankful Baptist Church, serving as president of the Baptist training union, member of the gospel choir and a member of the usher board. He was known for his creativity and expressed this through his carpentry work. One of Roy’s spiritual gifts was his visitations in the nursing homes. Mr. Carlton was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Lorraine Grimes, Mary Essie Carlton; and brothers, Howard Lee and Cornelius Carlton.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Carlton; son Edward Lamont Carlton and wife Lore and grandchildren of Wilmington, Delaware; daughter, Melonie Carlton of Raleigh; grandson, Maison Carlton of Raleigh; sisters, Dorothy Saner of Hamptonville, Lula Carlton and spouse Ben, Ernestine Surratt and spouse Morris all of Boomer; brothers, Ralph Carlton of Boomer, Robert Carlton and spouse Diane of Wilkesboro.

Private funeral service will be held. Mr. Carlton will lie-in-state at Miller Funeral Service from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 5, 2021. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.
