Jimmy Self, age 82, of Little Buck Hill Road in Newland, the Three Mile community, passed away on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at his home.

Born in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Plato and Lora Sparks Self. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Inez Dellinger Self who passed away in 2016. Also preceding him in death were his brothers; Charles, Bobby, Henry, and Walter Self.

Jimmy was a member of Henson Creek Baptist Church and before his declining health, he served faithfully in various positions. He loved the Lord and lived his life by Proverbs 18:24, “A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” Throughout his life he never met a stranger. In the years of the declining health of his late wife, he took excellent care of her. At the end of his life, he was ready to see her again.

Most of his life was spent doing construction which he enjoyed and took pride in his work. He also enjoyed gardening and just being with people. He loved his family and spending time with them, leaving a legacy to love the Lord and serve him. To those who love him, his contagious laugh and smile and the twinkle in his eyes will be missed.

Left to cherish his memories are his daughter; Pam Honeycutt and husband, Rev. Dean Honeycutt of Newland; his grandchildren; Melissa Hughes and husband, Dalton of Spruce Pine; Tyler Honeycutt; Elisabeth Honeycutt and fiancé, Matt Hughes; Jacob Honeycutt; and Daniel Cole Honeycutt all of Newland; his great granddaughter; Eliza Hughes of Spruce Pine; his sister; Alice Washburn and husband, Jay of Marion; his brother; John Self and wife, Joyce of Spruce Pine; several nieces and nephews.
