Robert Gene (Bob) Goforth, age 83, passed away Sunday, April 19, 2020 at SECU Hospice Home in Yadkinville.

During his courageous battle with lung and prostate cancer, he always maintained his famous sense of humor. He loved to read the Bible and worship the Lord. Mr. Goforth was born June 13, 1936 in Wilkes County to Albert Merl and Rita Barnette Goforth. He was a member of Lewis Fork Baptist Church and retired from Wilkes Community College after 29 years of teaching English and Reading. He was a graduate of West Wilkes High School, Appalachian State University with a Masters Degree, and Nova University where he earned a Doctorate Degree. Mr. Goforth was a retired Morse code operator with the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Raynard and Merl Goforth; sisters, Lucille Jones and spouse Bill, Aletta Grayson and spouse Jay, Melba Cheek and spouse Jim.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Zelma Call Goforth of the home; son, Robert Derek Goforth and fiancée, Marie Masterson of Hudson Falls, New York; brother, Allie Goforth and spouse Helen of Purlear; sister, Hazel Powell of North Wilkesboro; sisters- in-law, Ruth Goforth and Doris Goforth both of Ferguson.

Private graveside service with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guard Post 1142 will be held at Lewis Fork Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Dwayne Andrews and Rev. Sherrill Wellborn officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lewis Fork Baptist Church, 395 Lewis Fork Baptist Church Road, Purlear, NC 28665.
