Melba Sparks Pitman, 86, passed peacefully from this life on Saturday, July 13, 2019 at her home with her daughter, Kathy.

Melba was born to Arby and Alice Sparks of Mitchell County in 1933 and resided in Mitchell County until after the death of her husband, Lee, when she moved to Durham, NC, to be with her daughter. She was a lifelong member of Bear Creek Baptist Church. She was a member of the choir and always loved going to her special Sunday school class.

While she devoted her life to her family, she also worked outside the home for many years – Ellen’s Knitting Mill and Baxter’s Laboratory. After her retirement she especially enjoyed activities and work at the Mitchell County Senior Center.

Melba was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charlie Lee Pitman. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Jack and Ed Sparks, and sister, Hettie Sparks Stevenson.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Pitman Birkhead and her husband, Clarence F. Birkhead of Durham; grandson, Jacob Henry Birkhead of Charlotte; two sisters, Kathleen Buchanan of Bakersville and Milia Black of Burnsville.

Funeral service for Melba Pitman will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2019 at Bear Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Brandon Pitman will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. until the service hour at the church. Interment will be in the Bear Creek Baptist Church cemetery following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mitchell County Senior Center.
