Charles (Chuck) Edward Smith, age 91, of Boone, NC passed away peacefully, Monday, March 18 while at home with his family by his side.

Chuck was born 4/17/1927 to the late Charles T. and Marie F. Smith and was preceded in death by his beautiful wife Natalie.

Chuck was a Veteran of the US Navy and a retired electrical engineer. During his 91 years, Chuck was responsible for a unique and amazing list of accomplishments. By the time he was in his late teens, Chuck had traveled to and lived on both coasts. He was born in Detroit, MI but moved with his family to Richmond, VA when he was a small child. He spent extended time with his Uncle on Naval bases in both Key West and California. Both Chuck and his brother Lowell would join the US Navy, serving in WWII. After his discharge, Chuck attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute where he received his Electrical Engineering degree. Directly after graduation, he went to work for GE where he was tasked with the responsibility of ensuring the setup of the first TV stations in Honolulu and Las Vegas. While working for GE, Chuck was contracted by EG&G, to work in conjunction with the US Atomic Commission in the South Pacific on Operation Ivy, the first hydrogen bomb. Chuck also worked on the development of the B-36 and DEW line projects for GE. After the passing of his father, Chuck left GE and moved to Spruce Pine, NC where he would build and develop Deer Park Lake Estates and more importantly, meet his future wife Natalie. Throughout the course of their marriage, they would own and operate multiple other businesses including Scotchman Homes and develop Turkey Perch in Linville Falls, NC. Prior to their retirement to Boone, they were living in Richmond where Chuck worked closely with his brother as a project manager for Leigh Properties. Chuck truly enjoyed those years in Richmond as he was once again living close to his brother and sister and their families. In 1994, Chuck decided he and Natalie would retire to Boone so they could be close to their children and grandchildren.

Left behind to miss him and cherish his memory are his three children: Son, Terrence (Terry) Smith of Spruce Pine, NC, daughter Vanessa Brannigan of Morganton, NC and his son Mitchell Smith and his wife April of Boone; along with four amazing grandchildren: Austin Smith of Carrboro, NC; Bridget Brannigan of Morganton; Kelly Brannigan of Morganton and Alyssa Miska of Osnabrück, Germany. Chuck is also survived by his bother Lowell and sister Patty of Richmond, both of whom he loved and adored.

Per Chuck’s wishes, there will be no public services. Donations may be made in Chuck’s memory to the American Diabetes Association 2451 Crystal Drive, Suite 900 Arlington, VA 22202.
