Yvonne V. Gehring, age 90, of Wilkesboro, passed away Friday, January 25, 2019 at her home.

Yvonne was born September 18, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois to Edward and Mercedes Gehring. She earned a master’s degree in education specializing in the field of counseling pupil personnel services. She began her teaching career in a faith based school in California. In 1958 she joined the Lay Mission Helpers and was commissioned to Khartoum, Sudan where she taught at both boys and girls schools. From 1967 until her retirement in 1993, Yvonne continued her teaching and counseling work with the Department of Defense Overseas Dependent Schools. Her assignments included schools located in Japan, Okinawa, the Philippines, and Germany.

After moving to Wilkes County in 1993, Yvonne joined local groups such as the Senior Citizens Creative Writing Group, Seniors on Stage; National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and a Garden Club. She was a dedicated and active member of her church serving as a lector, parish council member, music director and publisher of the Parish voices newsletter. Yvonne filled her life with joy and love for all the people with whom she came in contact and cherished each of the special pets that came into her life.

Yvonne is survived by nephews and nieces living in California including Edward and Cheryl Gehring, Bill and wife Jo Gehring, Kim and wife Shirley Gehring, Barbara Gehring Lavoie, Donald and wife Constance Gehring. She is also survived by thirteen great nephews and nieces including Christinia Lavoie of Tennessee; and twenty one great great nephews and nieces.

She is preceded in death by her parents; and by her brothers, Richard E. and his wife Norma Gehring and younger brother, Donald H.F. Gehring (Navy Commander).

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 1, 2019 at St. John’s Catholic Church with Rev. John Hanic officiating. Burial will follow in St. John’s Catholic Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 until 10:45 a.m. on Friday, prior to the service.
