Jerry Don Boulton, 84, of Banner Elk passed into the eternal light and love of his Heavenly Father on February 12, 2018. Cardiac difficulties had been lengthy but ended in peace.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Lois Boulton, and by his brother Jack. He leaves behind his wife, Doris, daughter Caroline Fernandez, son-in-law, David and granddaughter, Elena, of Takoma Park, Maryland; a sister, Janet Shaw and husband Pete of Clinton, Iowa; and three nephews, Bill Wiseman of Linville, North Carolina, Scott Shaw of Wisconsin, and Brad Shaw of Minnesota.

Jerry graduated from Iowa State as an industrial engineer, but he wanted to fly and, rejecting a job with Amana, set out to fulfill that dream by joining the Navy. In the near future he would receive his commission and Wings at Pensacola Naval Air Station. There was an option now: fly with the Navy or US Marines. He chose the Marines.

Proud and patriotic, he served two tours in Vietnam as a pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps. The first 13 months were spent flying high altitude (jet) missions and the second tour, search, rescue and evacuation (H-46) helicopter missions, before heading back state-side with orders to the Naval Air Rework Facility (NARF) in Cherry Point, NC. Here his management skills were honed as Deputy Comptroller and in 1968 he received his Masters of Business Administration from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.

After retirement from active duty, he went back to work for the Navy in a civilian capacity. His work took him repeatedly from Cherry Point to the Pentagon to Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, where he was hired to help develop a joint logistics system for the Air Force, Navy, and Marines. Following his civilian retirement in 2003, he and his wife moved to Banner Elk.

Happy and blessed, he enjoyed the High Country for 12 years. Jerry was a member of the Church of the Holy Cross in Valle Crucis where he was a faithful Parishioner and servant. His charm and sense of humor endured throughout his illness. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and dedicated man of service, Jerry touched many lives and will be sorely missed.

His funeral service will be held at the Church of the Holy Cross (122 Skiles Way, Valle Crucis, NC 28691) on Saturday, the 17th of Feb. at 1:00pm. Miliatary Honors, provided by the United States Marine Corp and American Legion Post 130, will follow at the Holy Cross Episcopal Church Columbarium. Friends and relatives will be greeted at the reception in the parish hall following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Holy Cross “Mission Outreach Commission” which will go to help those of the area having urgent needs. The contact number is (828)963-4609.
