The Avery County Board of Elections’ Executive Committee, along with the 19 precinct representatives, nominated and voted on recommending a new interim sheriff of Avery County.

The Avery Journal reports on that January 4, former ACSO Chief Detective Danny Phillips was selected as interim sheriff. Phillips will take over from current sheriff Kevin Frye, who will resign February 1.

According to the report, Executive Committee Chair Erin Buchanan noted that Frye had offered his recommendation of current Chief Deputy Lee Buchanan before the vote, but the committee took the vote very seriously due to the implications to citizens, Sheriff's Office employees, and candidate that will be running in the upcoming election.

Phillips, has over 30 years of law enforcement experience and has lived in Avery most of his life. He retired in 2018 after having served as Chief Detective of the Avery Sheriff’s Office, Chief of Newland Police Department, and six years at the Sheriff’s Office in Wake County.

Avery County Commissioners are required to confirm the nomination.

The next Commissioners meeting is January 28.
