Watauga Medical Center has seen a surge in COVID-19 cases.

The Watauga Democrat reports Appalachian Regional Healthcare System Tuesday says 22 patients are hospitalized with COVID-19 as of January 11, and 18 of them were not vaccinated.

According to the report, of the 91 deaths at the hospital, only eight have been vaccinated. All three deaths since the new year were not vaccinated.

Appalachian Regional Healthcare System said on its Facebook page that these numbers indicate that vaccination is reducing the chances that people will be hospitalized or lose their lives due to COVID-19.

According to AppHealthCare's COVID dashboard Wednesday, there are 403 positive cases reported in the last five days.
