The 44th annual Woolly Worm Festival is happening this weekend at the historic Banner Elk Elementary School in downtown Banner Elk.

Saturday and Sunday, some of the fastest woolly worms around the region will compete for the honor of predicting the winter weather for the High Country this season, while throngs of folks will be shopping great handcrafted wares from juried artists, lots of great music and delicious things to eat.

Cost to attend is $6 per person, age six to twelve just $4, and up to age 5 are free. The Woolly Worm races begin around 10:00 am and continue all day until the final race around 4 pm, with $1000 dollars on the line for the fastest worm.

The 44th Annual Woolly Worm Festival is co-sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Banner Elk and the Avery County Chamber of Commerce. All proceeds are given back to the community to enhance our schools, children's programs, and to promote business and tourism in Avery County.
