Watermelons are typically not very large when grown here in the High Country due to the shorter growing season, but that doesn't mean you can't grow 'em big. Just ask 9-year old Nolan Davis.

The Ashe Post and Times reports Davis grew a 36 pound giant watermelon. The Ashe County native planted the watermelon in April and spent six months growing and caring for his plants, watering every day it didn't rain and protecting against frosts.

His first watermelon was harvested on his ninth birthday, but he has several more left to pick.

Nolan also grows strawberries, blueberries, corn and other produce, and said that his favorite part of growing them is when he gets to eat them.
