More information has been released in the arrest of a former Highland Games employee.

The Avery Journal reports Thomas Dewey Taylor was arrested September 27 in Linville and is a person of interest in an embezzlement case.

According to the report, the State Bureau of Investigation was notified Taylor was suspected of embezzling money and committing financial credit card theft.

Upon further investigation, an improvised explosive device with ignitable liquids was located, initiating a multi-agency response including the SBI, the Avery County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and local emergency services.

The items were properly and safely disposed of and after consultation with District Attorney Seth Banks, Thomas Dewey Taylor Jr. was identified as a suspect and was arrested.

Taylor, 43, of 316 Snowshoe in Newland, has been charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of possession of a weapon of mass destruction.

The investigation is ongoing.
