Watauga High School has canceled its homecoming dance for the second year in a row.

The Watauga Democrat reports the Oct. 2 was canceled due to COVID-19 numbers and the safety of students.

A number of alternatives were discussed among school officials and student council members before Principal Chris Blanton determined the safest option was to cancel.

Blanton questioned whether it was any safer to have it outside and unmasked than held inside and everyone wearing masks.

According to the report, many students feel disappointed at another lost high school memory, while others are understanding of the need to prioritize safety.

Blanton said right now the primary focus is to keep students in school.
