Former Appalachian State Chancellor Dr John Thomas has passed away.

Watauga Online reports Thomas's passing was announced Thursday evening by current Chancellor Dr Sheri Everts.

According to his obituary, Thomas was born on April 23, 1931 in Fort Worth, TX. He earned a BS degree in Electrical Engineering, a JD in Law, an MS in Research and Development Management, and a Doctorate in Business Administration. He served in both the US Marine Corps and the US Navy.

He worked for NASA in various management positions during the late 60’s and early 70’s during the time of the first moon landings.

In 1974 he joined Appalachian State University as the Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs. In 1979 the UNC Board of Governors appointed John Edwin Thomas to the position of Chancellor of ASU, which he held until his retirement in 1993.

After he served in Raleigh as the State Utilities Commissioner, he returned to the High Country to teach classes in the Walker College of Business until 2004.

A public memorial service is scheduled for 12 noon on Saturday September 11 at Boone United Methodist Church.
